Hello!

Hi Tea Lovers!!

How have you been? It's been awhile since I've updated you all. I currently live in California, however I'm moving to my home state of Michigan at the end of the month. If only I could have moved in the Spring- moving in the wintertime is very unpleasant. Here in San Francisco it's been very rainy lately. Nobody likes moving heavy items in the rain. No offense to Californians, but they really are not good drivers - add rain and it's a disaster!!

I still drink tea. There's a place in Burlingame, California that my boyfriend and I go to a lot and it's a beautiful tea house that does afternoon tea with traditional tea sandwiches, scones, and lovely Madelines. I usually get Black vanilla bean tea with milk and sugar with cucumber sandwiches.

Oh, before I forget to tell you. I have a new promo code for Canton Tea Co. You can use my promo code as many times as you want for 10% off your entire order. Don't worry- if the products you want from Canton are on sale, the promo code for 10% off still works!!!

Leah2017 is the new 10% off promo code for my Tea blog readers!!!!!!  Get some amazing tea from Canton Tea Co today. PS- I love their Matcha- I had a matcha latte today.

What is your favorite go to winter tea? Do you ever have tea lattes? I love a good tea latte in the winter time.

Have you seen what I'm doing with my life recently? I made a business out of my artwork. I'm having a blast. If you like art, please visit my page. Here's the link. Below is a painting I did called "Viva"

Thanks for stopping by!

Tea art and Lovejoy's Tea Room in San Francisco

Hi tea lovers!

This weekend my boyfriend and I went to Lovejoy's Tea Room in San Francisco for a rare treat. I discovered the tea room online by accident a few weeks ago  and wanted to go, but noticed there were no open reservations for 3 weeks. We put our names in and the day finally arrived, we drove up to the city from the peninsula and got really lucky with the parking and walked right into a tea wonderland. Every space in the building was decorated with tea related items. I must have seen 300 teacups in that room. The decor was amazing, but the best was yet to come!!

I ordered vanilla lavender black tea and oh my goodness it was amazing. In fact, I can't stop thinking about it. As well as the tea I had the "savory tea" which includes two finger sandwiches and a scone with cream and jam, the good ole English way. My boyfriend was not impressed when I put cream on both sides. Apparently, in England you only put cream on one side, then jam on the other and you put the two halves together like a sandwich.

The sandwiches I ordered were probably the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. I'm not exaggerating, either. I had coronation chicken- which is also a common British sandwich made of chicken in mild curry mayo. If you're American and reading this you probably just thought "gross." That's what I thought too, until I tried it when I was living in Wales and I became slightly obsessed. The combination of that, lettuce and soft bread is absolutely delicious!

I also had a salmon, cream cheese and caper finger sandwich and those were really excellent as well. My boyfriend had horseradish and roast beef and turkey with English mustard. I didn't try the turkey, but the roast beef and horseradish was pretty good.

After we came home from the tea room I felt really inspired so I decided to paint a tea pot. It turned out so well that I think I'm going to put it on my etsy store. After I painted this I decided that I wanted to do more tea related art in the future. What is something you'd like to be painted? Let me know what you think of my painting!! PS if you like the painting below, you can buy it Here!!

Update!

Hi everyone!

I recently moved back to the United States and I'm living in California. I have found myself drinking mostly green tea which is quite a difference from my normal black tea preference. I love brewing home-made (green) iced tea and drinking it during the day.

I recently ordered some tea from a company that I have never tried before, and I plan to review it after it comes. The company is called Tea Guys and I ordered several kinds of both green and black. They are a company from Massachusetts, which I love because I would rather support smaller companies that big ones (like Teavanna).

Does anyone else get super excited when waiting for a package arrive? I can't wait to try this new tea!

What have you been drinking lately? As I said, I'm currently on a green tea with pineapple kick, but before that it was black tea and oolong!

Also, my coupon code is now Leah2016 for 10 % off your entire order at Cantonteaco.com , their loose leaf teas are the best.

See you soon for the review!

Tea in the US

Hello tea lovers!!

On this fine day in Michigan I am currently sipping Twining's Black tea with vanilla, a tasty warm concoction of goodness. It's been very warm in Michigan these past few days, is this fall or the Springtime?

I know it's been a long time since we communicated, but I have been a very busy bee, indeed. I just recently finished my masters degree and then I was awarded it! Yeah! My other blog has been just as neglected as this one, but since I have moved from the UK to the US I will be doing great new things here.

Which tea shall I review next? Is there a tea you've had your eye on but haven't purchased because you were unsure? Is there a tea that has intrigued you? Are you a tea company in the US that would want me to try your product? Either way, comment below or use my "contact me" form.

Another thing, since my dissertation began, I've been teaching myself how to paint in order to remain sane and stress free. I have just begun a store online for it and I'd really love it if you stopped by. If you like any of the art, by all means, go ahead and purchase.

Here is the store: Art by Leah Nadeau

And here is a sneak preview of a painting that is available:

PS- I'm still partnered with Canton Tea Co, so if you want any tea you can get a 10% off discount by using coupon code: teareviews10

Happy sipping!

Please stop by my latest project

Hi tea lovers! I just wanted to let you know that I've started another blog called MidTwenties Gal. I love blogging about tea, but the issue with it is that is it limits my audience as well as limits what I can actually talk about. I wanted to make a blog that could broaden what I could talk about.

On this new blog I will be talking about the lifestyle of being in your midtwenties and articles on things such as trends in fashion, reviews on products- clothing, food, beverages, video games, TV shows, movies, you name it!  I feel like if you're a girl in your twenties or early thirties, you can easily relate to this new blog.

Even if you're not a woman in your twenties, have a look at my new project and tell me what you think. My latest post is on summer nail polish colors!

Tea Review: Canton Tea's Green Dragon + Discount

Hello tea friends!

If you haven't already noticed, during the month of May I've been absent. My graduate degree is almost coming to an end and I had 3 papers to write, totaling at 12,000 words. You can bet that I devoted all my time to my studies. Although my blog had to suffer, it's for a good cause. In the next couple months I'll be writing my dissertation, but since I'll be managing my time well, my blog will still be updated like it used to be. How about we review this amazing green tea blend from Canton Tea now.

I was really excited when I opened the bag, because so many amazing scents overwhelmed my senses. What really stood out to me was the citrus and I love citrusy tea. Now, this tea is sencha from Hunan, China and once I opened it I was really excited to see the giant pieces of lemongrass and lemon peels. Lemon + Green tea = love.

As you can see, all the individual ingredients in the blend are really big, generous helpings. You can clearly see the tea leaves, the lemongrass, licorice root, lemon peel and little bits of ginger. I was hesitant because I despise ginger, but I honestly was willing to give it a try. If it was just ginger and green tea I would have had serious reservations about it.

As you can see, in the photos above you can see the tea steeping and then the tea steeped and ready to drink. It's important not to use just boiled water, because with green tea it's really delicate and if you use water that's too hot, it will compromise the taste. I usually boil my kettle and let the water sit for a few minutes so it can cool. It only needs 2-3 minutes of steeping time. This was a 2 minute steep.

Like I said, I was nervous about the ginger in the tea, but it was extremely complementary to the other ingredients in the tea. It worked in harmony with the licorice root, (another thing I don't care for, but it worked well) lemongrass, lemon peel and lemon oil. Basically, a lemony goodness drink that is perfect for summer. It's a very light tea, which I appreciate because I love a light green tea, typically. I do like Matcha, but I struggled with the Matcha challenge because it's quite strong. This Sencha is very light and the citrus ingredients make the taste really lovely. It's also noteworthy that this tea is not astringent at all. It kind of reminds me of an oolong, which is great because oolong is my favorite. I rate this tea 5/5 stars because there's not a thing I would change. It's just so refreshing and well-made.

If you remember, I do have a partnership with Canton Tea. If you use the 10% off discount: Leah2016 at checkout, I get 10% commission of your order and you get 10% off your order, which is win win. It's not much, but it helps. I'm happy I partnered with them because their tea has an ethnical certification and they get their tea straight from the source, making it socially and environmentally friendly.

Thanks for reading.

DeDe Instant Thai Tea: A Review

I first discovered Thai tea when I lived in San Francisco. I saw someone else order a Thai iced tea and was interested because of its vibrant orange color. This began my love for Thai tea as well as Thai food. I swear I could eat Thai food every single day!

First off, I'm not sure how new these are, but in college I looked to buy this kind of instant powder everywhere. When I was 19 (so 5 years ago), I bought Thai tea and condensed milk to make my own Thai tea. It never tasted quite right. Making proper Thai tea is a long process, nothing convenient like a tea bag or tea infuser. So finding these instant Thai Tea powder sachets got me really excited. Because I've never tried them, I also got Green Tea and Thai Coffee, but I'll save those to for another review.

If you're interested in buying this tea, if you click the graphic I designed above, it will lead you to the Amazon link where you can get it in the US. If you're outside the US, just Google it and you'll find it no problem. Alright, let's start with the little packet and what it looks like.

So, as you can see we are looking at the packet on the far right. When they say 3 in 1 it doesn't mean there are 3 servings in one packet, it means there are 3 packets, but you're only paying for 1. When it comes to Thai tea, I have really high expectations. Let's see what we're working with here..

Just warning you now, it will look like you took a handful of carrots and threw them in a blender or food processor with some water. This tea is bright orange. However, luckily for the consumers, it doesn't take away from the taste. I really did like the tea, however I wouldn't say it was authentic. It tasted like Thai Tea, but just very weak. Usually you'll order Thai tea in a restaurant and it will be very sweet, but the tea is so strong that it balances it out. I feel like this is weak and if you add too much sugar, it'll taste a bit like cotton candy. With that said, if you like weaker tea and you want to try this, you'll like it. Oh, almost forget. This tea is also amazing cold. So it's perfect for the spring or summer months!

For the rating I'd say about 3.5 out of 5. It was good, but I was hoping it would be even more amazing.

Today I was walking around the town I live in and I saw this little card shop with a nice little tea themed window display. I thought you all would like it.

Until next time,
Leah

Yerba Mate tea, a guest post by Veronica C

Our favourite tea blogger Leah has asked me to write a guest post on mate, a south american infusion with roots that extend back to pre - colonial times. Being Uruguayan myself, that was a tall order.

Believe me, I've pondered a lot on what to focus this post about mate: its history, its chemistry, its benefits... but finally I've decided to write about what southern-bound visitors and infusion lovers won't easily read about: the very soul of mate.

Anyhow, some facts first.

To make mate you will first need yerba which translates "herb" to English, and this is where some misunderstandings begin. The word "herb" has some "illegal" connotations but in Spanish the word means just the dried leaves of a bush (Ilex paraguariensis) that grows in the heart of the continent. The production process include the industrial drying of the leaf that is then crushed and stationed for up to a year before being packaged to be consumed.

    Fresh yerba leaves

Infusion-ready product

Mate can be purchased on every retail corner of my country; In Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. You can easily see there is a dimension on mate that goes beyond countries and nationalities, a common ground on people that share the same taste. It represents  the culture of whole continent.

Now imagine you live in the countryside, maybe as a Guarani native in pre colony times or a Gaucho in extensive cattle farms. When dawn breaks or dusk falls, the grassy hills surround you until the horizon and there is a sense of beauty but loneliness because this corner of the world has always been  sparsely populated.

This means, cows and dogs are keeping you company... not a very entertaining way to live.

So mate will be right there next to you, keeping you busy by the fire, preventing your feeling down and lonely. Scientists explain that the high caffeine level on the dry leaves keeps you away from depression and sleep (link here) but people like to say, the mate becomes your compañero (alas, in English, your soul mate).

The ceremony of mate:

Well, with the mate it is not exactly a japanese tea ceremony. The native Guaranis that began this tradition were rather simple people. Also the Spanish conquistadores and their descendants were rather tough people that would not invest too much time on it: after all it was supposed to be a way to sanitize water by filtering through layers of leaves.

Traditional mate should be drank out of a "calabaza" (dry pumpkin) like this one. It is fully recyclable and environmentally friendly.

The calabaza is filled 2/3ds with yerba and boiling water is poured on it. After it has soaked the yerba expands to almost fill the container and you are ready to sip the infusion through a metal straw.

Burning hot, bitter tasting, aromatic, earthy flavour filling your mouth and nostrills.

And your soul.

Different ways to drink mate:

In Uruguay: people go to public places carrying thermos and mates. You can pick out a uruguayan person in a huge crowd, because of this feature. Here are two pictures I took at the beach at the same time, notice most people sipping mate.

By the way, this is Punta del Este, a posh resort

In Argentina: drinking mate is more home-oriented. Hot water is poured out of a kettle, because it would be sipped more or less in a hurry before leaving for  work. Also, sugar is usually is mixed with yerba, something other southeners deride for being "childish".

Alone: already discussed this on the country side, but mate has found it's way to the urban environment and for instance is sipped by students trying to prevent falling asleep while cramming for tomorrow's exams.

In a group of people: well, I know this will seem disgusting to many of you, but good manners involve sipping the mate and passing it on to the person next to you. A total stranger or your closest friend or partner, whomever. Again, the high caffeine level will prompt lively conversation, jokes... you know, we latin americans like to talk a lot. And loud. Mate is defined as the beverage of friendship.

Mate cocido "cooked mate": For the rest of the world who does not want to get involved into the dry pumpkin, thermo and metal straw thing, you can drink it as an infusion. Bitter, earthy, very scant colour, it's not your usual camomile or your favorite tisane

Hope this posts brings to you a different approach to mate, but if you are looking for the traditional one, like Wikipedia here you can find it. Hasta pronto amigos!!

Leah's Spring Tea Giveaway

International Giveaway!!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Hi friends! Since I had so much fun last time with my giveaway, I thought I'd do another one. I have two prizes this time. The first prize is a hand painted tea bag by artist Ruby Silvious (find her website here). She has donated this beautiful work of art for other tea lovers to cherish and enjoy. The second prize is Matcha green tea. I'm doing this giveaway with Rafflecopter, which makes it easier for you to enter and easier for me to find a winner. I've done a short interview with Ruby about the amazing prize she's donated. Below is the prize that can be won and then let's have a look at the interview...then to the giveaway process!

Copyright Ruby Silvious

Above is the stunning painting done on a teabag that can be yours if you win the giveaway! Now to the interview with the amazing artist, Ruby.

Leah: How long have you been creating art?

Ruby: As early as five years old, when my Japanese great grandmother taught me how to fold my first crane. On the paternal side, I was inspired by my father, who was a self-taught artist and calligrapher. I remember drawing a portrait of my youngest sister when I was 15.

Leah: When did you start experimenting with painting on teabags, or pistachio shells, as I've seen?

Ruby: Two years ago, I read about a community in South Africa that produced handmade products out of used tea bags. The idea of reusing something that I was tossing out everyday, and creating something beautiful with it, fascinated me. By then I already had a collection of pistachio shells that I had been doodling on with markers when I discovered the common denominator. I've been working with recycled and discarded materials ever since. In addition to teabags and pistachio shells, I also paint on egg shell shards and origami-fold paper bags and crumb wrappers into mock brassieres. It's been fun!

Leah: How can people see your art if they're interested in purchasing it?

Ruby: Local museum shops in upstate New York carry my tea bag designs. You can also purchase my art on my website: www.rubysilvious.com

Leah: Why do you want to giveaway a piece of your art to the other readers?

Ruby: People have this notion of what traditional art should be. By bringing new life to everyday, familiar things, I hope to inspire new forms of creativity.

Leah: What's your favorite kind of tea? How many cups of tea do you have a day?

Ruby: I am, by no means, a tea connoisseur. Twinings' Earl Grey tops my list of favorites, with Ambessa's Choco Nut Blend a close second. I drink 2-3 cups a day and I prefer bagged tea - for obvious reasons!

Thank you so much to Ruby for donating this amazing work of art and for answering the interview questions. For those wondering, last giveaway winner Gary is very pleased with his prize. He sent me this photo of him with the tea a couple weeks ago:
